Decision of the Press Council
At its meeting on 23rd July 2010 the Council gave careful consideration to the application to appeal from Ms Treacy and decided to admit the appeal for its consideration on the grounds that the case involved issues of significant public interest.
The Council gave full consideration of the circumstances and documentation related to the case and to the Press Ombudsman’s interpretation of Principle 5 (Privacy) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines. The Council felt the matters which were the subject of the complaint did not, when taken in the context of the recent criminal proceedings, amount to a breach of the Principle.
The Decision of the Press Ombudsman is therefore upheld.
