The Press Council today called on publications which are not already members to join it and launched a revised version of its criteria for membership.
The new application form provides information on how the Press Council assesses membership applications and commits to informing applicants the reason/s for the decision it reaches. “The need to maintain trust in the press has never been more urgent”, said Chairperson Rory Montgomery. “By joining the Press Council, publications in Ireland can show their commitment to producing journalism to the highest ethical and professional standards and to being accountable to the public”.
The Deputy Chairperson of the Press Council, James Doorley, explained the decision to revise the membership criteria. “The Irish media landscape is changing rapidly, and we are getting applications from publications that are very different from the traditional newspapers and magazines which were the founding members of the Press Council”, he said. “There are today many new means of publication, production, and dissemination of journalism. We recognised that we needed to update our criteria and to make our admission process more structured and transparent”. Mr Doorley chaired the sub-group of the Press Council which drew up the new criteria and will be the chairperson of the new Membership Assessment Committee. He said that the Press Council will from now on give applicants reasons for the decision to admit or not admit them as members. “This may be helpful to publications that wish to re-apply should their ability to meet the criteria change”, he said.
The new criteria come into effect on 6 January, 2026.
