Oct 3, 2014 | Appeals to the Press Council

Decision of the Press Council of Ireland (3 October 2014)

The Press Council rejected the newspaper’s appeal in relation to the Press Ombudsman’s findings under Principles 1 and 4 and affirmed the Press Ombudsman’s decision. The Press Council agreed with the decision of the Press Ombudsman that neither of the letters were an attempt to “gag” the newspaper or to silence its reporting.

The Press Council decided to allow the newspaper’s appeal in relation to the finding made by the Press Ombudsman under Principle 2 of the Code. The Press Council decided that these statements were a reasonable interpretation of the result of the poll in question, and overturned this part of the Press Ombudsman’s decision.
