Applications are now open for the Lyra McKee Bursary Scheme 2025

The Press Council of Ireland and Office of the Press Ombudsman is pleased to provide funding for one or two aspiring journalists from Ireland to take part in the Centre for Investigative Journalism’s Lyra McKee Bursary Scheme 2025 .

Created in memory of Lyra McKee, the brave investigative journalist killed by dissident republicans in Derry in 2019, the Lyra McKee bursary scheme is a five-month programme designed to support aspiring journalists from underrepresented backgrounds. It provides an opportunity to get the skills, mentorship, and confidence needed to succeed in journalism.

What’s included?

The Lyra McKee Bursary Scheme covers mentoring sessions from leading investigative journalists, online and in person investigative journalism training, attendance at the #CIJSummer Investigative Journalism Conference 2025,  and a Pitch to the Editors session. Find out more.

Who Can Apply?
We strongly encourage applications from:

  • People from working-class backgrounds
  • People of colour
  • LGBTQ+ individuals
  • People with disabilities
  • Carers and members of the Traveller community

Applicants must be 18+ and reside in the UK or Republic of Ireland.

What Does the Bursary Cover?
The bursary covers:

  • Training and mentorship fees
  • Travel and accommodation for the #CIJSummer Conference (if needed)
