Appeal No. 2274/2025 – A Woman and Independent.ie

Nov 19, 2025 | Appeals to the Press Council

The woman appealed the decision of the Press Ombudsman to only partially uphold a complaint she made about an article published by Independent.ie.

The matter was considered at a meeting of the Press Council held on 19 November 2025.

The Press Council noted that there are two specific grounds for appeal, and that an appeal must make explicit reference to one or both of the grounds, which are:

1. The procedures followed in making the decision were not in accordance with the published procedures for considering complaints.
2. That there has been an error in the Press Ombudsman’s or Press Council subcommittee’s application of the Principles of the Code of Practice.

The Press Council decided that as the woman did not include explicit reference to either of the two grounds for appeal contained in the Press Council’s appeals procedures, the appeal had to be deemed inadmissible.
