Appeal No. 2102/2025 – Father Pádraig McCarthy and The Irish Times

May 21, 2025 | Appeals to the Press Council

Father Pádraig McCarthy appealed a decision of the Press Ombudsman on a complaint he made about an article published by The Irish Times. Father McCarthy appealed the decision on the grounds that there had been an error in the Press Ombudsman’s application of Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) of the Press Council’s Code of Practice.

At its meeting on 21 May 2025 the Press Council considered the appeal on the grounds relied upon and on the information, documentation and submissions made by both parties to the appeal.

The Press Council found that Father McCarthy’s appeal merely disagreed with the decision of the Press Ombudsman and contained no evidence that she had erred in her application of the Code of Practice. It therefore decided to reject the appeal.
