Appeal 2063/2024 – A Man and Independent.ie

Dec 4, 2024 | Appeals to the Press Council

The man appealed the decision of the Press Ombudsman to the Press Council of Ireland on the grounds that the Press Ombudsman had erred in her application of Principle 8 (Prejudice) of the Press Council’s Code of Practice.

The man argued that the Press Ombudsman had misinterpreted Principle 8 of the Code of Practice by considering only the intention of the article, and not its likely outcome.

At its meeting on 20 November 2024 the Press Council considered the appeal on the grounds relied upon and on the information, documentation and submissions made by both parties to the appeal.

Appeal Decision

The Press Council decided to reject the appeal.  It decided that the Press Ombudsman had correctly interpreted and applied Principle 8 of the Code of Practice in her decision, including in regard to the question of grave offence.
